Oktoberfest usually brings one image to mind: beer mugs, bratwurst, and traditional Bavarian bands. Step into Harvard Square in the fall, though, and you’ll see a festival that breaks every expectation. Cambridge transforms the celebration into something louder, brighter, and far more global.
This version of Oktoberfest, shaped by community, culture, and creativity, continues to grow into an event unlike anything else in the region.
Harvard Square’s Oktoberfest stands out for one simple reason. It blends global food, local artisans, live music, and street performances into a cultural mix that mirrors the diversity of Cambridge itself. The day also overlaps with major celebrations, such as the American Filipino Festival and HONK! Parade, creating an experience filled with color, sound, and movement. Walking into the festival feels less like stepping into an event and more like joining a living, breathing celebration of everything that makes the neighborhood unique.
The roots of this tradition run deep. The Harvard Square Business Association has been hosting Oktoberfest for 46 years, and its history is built on community connection. When I spoke with Harvard Square Business Association executive director Denise Jillson, who has led the event for two decades, she shared the story of how the HONK! Parade first became part of the celebration.
It began with just three brass bands riding the T from Davis Square to Harvard Square, tubas in hand. Their energy was such a hit that it sparked what is now a massive annual parade where spectators turn into participants, filling the streets with music and movement.
A key part of the festival’s identity comes from the vendor community. These vendors return year after year, building relationships that make Harvard Square feel like home. Their booths bring food from around the world, handmade art, local goods, and a spirit of creativity that ties the entire event together. This connection between the vendors and the community is what gives the festival its heart.
Harvard Square’s Oktoberfest also embraces a personality all its own. Instead of sticking to traditional Bavarian themes, the event explodes with toe-tapping, knee-knocking, hip-swinging, hand-clapping, heart-pounding performances that reflect the city’s character. Musicians, dancers, honkers, and artists fill the streets, turning the neighborhood into a vibrant showcase of expression and culture.
Of course, no Oktoberfest is complete without great food. I stopped by the Alden & Harlow beer garden tent with my son Adriel to try the bratwurst, packed with flavor and spice. Eating in the middle of Brattle Square, surrounded by music and laughter, captured exactly what makes this day so special.
Harvard Square’s Oktoberfest is a celebration of community as much as it is a festival. It brings people together from all backgrounds to share food, music, and experiences that stay with you long after the day ends.
